After ending, the modern conflicts
still continue to make damage with the anti-personnel mines, generously sowed
in the ground. With several hundreds of victims each month all over the
world, the mine clearance became an international priority and, for this
mission, the soldiers use portable metal detectors. And as their reliability
is not always efficient, the experts of the Pentagon had idea to use the
bees. Since 1981, the American army carries out two projects, one for
detection and the localization of the anti-personnel mines, the other for the
detection of bio terrorists attacks: because the bees are perfect to become
bomb disposal experts. In the bee, the antennas act as nose, but also as
fingers. This body is so strongly developed that it does not fulfil an only
olfactive but also tactile role. In fact, the genius of the bees it their
exceptional sense of smell, largely finer and more significant than dogs
smell. But also their astonishing capacity to memorize a great number of
different odours. However the bees can be rather easily drawn up to move
towards an odorous source, in laboratory, on the model of the conditioning of
Pavlov. The American researchers undertook to draw up the bees with the
recognition of the odour of trinitrotoluene, more known under the name of TNT
and principal constituting detonating load of the anti-personnel mines. |

BIOGAS: A new process
makes it possible to improve the effectiveness of the production of biogas: The Agricultural GENIUS
Leibniz institute of Potsdam-Bornim (ATB) developed a new process of
magnetic separation of the bacteria making it possible to double the
productivity of the generating stations of biogas. Using a simple physical
process, the scientists managed to retain the bacteria in the engine and to
enrich them. Magnetic particles are introduced in very small quantity into
the tank and reserves into the substrate by the flakes of bacteria. It
becomes possible then, using a permanent magnet to separate the bacteria and
to reintroduce them at the appropriate time in the engine. For the
magnetizing of the flakes of bacteria, one can have recourse to usual
products such as ferrite. The tests showed that thanks to such a process, one
could double the output of the bacteria and thus increase the productivity of
the installation. This process is well adapted to the fermentation of
substrates rich in water, such as the juices of distilling, but it is also
usable for the solid renewable matter fermentation |
