ACTUALITY AND
ODOURS : OFFERING ROSES IS MUCH MORE THAN AN ACT OF LOVE |
||
|
A
German scientific study on the memory and the sleep indicates that, smelling
the same rose perfume while learning a task and sleeping helps better
TO record what was learned. Although the idea seems eccentric, the study of
Jan Born and his Lübeck University team is published in the famous Science
magazine. Born and his colleagues exposed volunteers to the rose odour when
they were to learn the position from various photographs placed in a square.
Half of the participants was then exposed to an odour of rose during their
sleep whereas no odour was added for the other half. The result: the
participants subjected to the odour of rose during their sleep
remembered 97% of the charts sites against 86% for the group
without night odour. According to the researchers, which is learned during
the day is stored in part of the brain called the hippocampus. During the
night, these memories are reactivated and transferred in the cortex to become
permanent memories. The hippocampus being sensitive to the odours, those
could help the reactivation during the sleep. The operation must be made in a
very precise way, the volunteers must be exposed to the odour during the
major sleep. The same odour during the paradoxical sleep (phase according to
the major sleep) did not have any effect. It is very difficult to differentiate
the phases well from the sleep without medical equipment and the brain
quickly becomes accustomed to the odour; this one must thus be frequently
activated and extinct. Moreover, this type of stimulation would not be
effective for all the trainings. For example, the control or the training of
a musical instrument is not activity which call upon the hippocampus. |

An atomic G7. A
great victory after a hard battle. Thus the
French Minister for Finances, Thierry Breton, presents the fact that the
nuclear energy was for the first time voted by plebiscite by the seven
richest countries of the world during the G7 meeting, this weekend, in
Washington. More. The French Post
Office places order of 500 electric vehicles: After
Mr. Dassault announced the delivery of some electric Kangoo to the Post
office, a large order was awaited. It is almost done. It carries for 500
cars, and as opposed to what one could think, that leaves a big margin of
progression, because the Post office has more than 60.000 vehicles (and
30.000 bicycles!). The biomethanisation in Brussels in 2009: The Ministers for the cleanliness and the environment of Brussels have
just found an agreement on launching a center of biomethanisation in
Bruxelles for 2009..

Cold Plasma against depollution: For ten years, the scientists first and industrialists then, are
interested in the possibility of using cold plasmas for the depollution of
gas effluents. The basic idea is to exploit the chemical reactivity of the
radicals and species generated within plasma to transform the polluting
molecules into inoffensive molecules. This reaction proceeds in the air with
the ordinary pressure and without thermal losses. The residues obtained can
be sometimes develop. The pollutants aimed in the current developments are
primarily the oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, the COV and the molecules
malodorous. The production of reactive radicals to cleanse gas effluents is
also possible with the technology of the electron beams used already in
industrial applications in the world. It seems rather difficult today to
establish a comparison between the two processes. Cold plasma is rather more
expensive to implement, but its development much more recent still leaves
place to technical-economic optimisations. On the other hand, it profits from
a great flexibility in use and can adapt to very variable gas outputs, since
one plans to as well use it on chimneys of power stations as on automobile
mufflers |

COMICS, BOOK Toxic Planet With
a simple and effective drawing, and a humour as pickling solution as a
molecule of synthesis, the album Toxic Planet makes laugh yellow. It is a
world where the nightmares are
bucolic walk, where the subversive ones

have still healthy lungs and where the yellowbellies do not dare to
take of their gas mask, one moment time of tenderness. |

A zero
discharge flying SmartFish It is yet only one small-scale model
but it flies! It draws its energy from a fuel cell using oxygen in air and
the hydrogen of its tank. Gas flarings
discharges: zero. Koni Schafroth, Swiss engineer,
joined together a team that has been working on an extravagant conditions
schedule: two places, a tare weight of 400 kilogrammes, a minimal speed of
125 km/h but of the possible points at Mach 0,85, is nearly 900 km/h, the
apparatus having to be tilted in heavy version, able to carry 20 passengers. |
For the shape of the machine, the engineer and his team took as a
starting point… the fish. Thus was born SmartFish, reduced at this stage at
the state of model but already impressive, with its pace of jet bionics,
equipped with vast complex wings, almost deltas but round by multiple curves.
It is this machine which has been just tested during a first flight which was
filmed. |
