For the 2008 Olympic Games,
Beijing dreams of a blue sky and the city multiplies the tactics to counter
pollution On the place Tiananmen, it is not rare to see an idler carrying a
mask for better breathing. In 2005, a study of the European space agency
concluded that the Chinese capital and the neighbouring areas had the most
nitrogen dioxide level in the world. This result did not prevent Wang Dawei,
director of the Air quality within the agency of the environmental protection
of Beijing, to post a confidence with any test last Thursday. In order not to
miss its blow, Mr. Dawei envisaged an operation-shock. During a two months
period, more than two million cars will have to remain motionless. In order
to encourage the Pekinese
drivers, the authorities promise paid holidays and free subscriptions with
public transport. From June 25 to September 17, most of the 3000 building
sites of construction of the City will stop. The polluting factories and
power stations will be closed and the roads will be regularly sprinkled to
avoid dust. Planes and rockets will be even used to disperse in the clouds of
silver iodide or liquid nitrogen in order to cause rains and to thus get rid
of the suspended particles. “Progress was slow, but without all these
projects, the quality of the air would have been worse than it is currently”,
supports Mr. Wang. “There are ecological problems, but our Chinese friends
make what that they can to prevent them and find solutions”, ensured on its

GREEN COAL: A company based in
Panama, developed a new green coal
production technology which recently received the price Von Maritus
for the environment, delivered by the
Chamber of Commerce and Industry Brazil-Germany. The system takes part
in the reduction of pollution and the deforestation while offering new
opportunities to the small producers. This industrial process uses metal
furnaces rather than brick furnaces. First it makes possible to reduce the
time of carbonization to 8h whereas the traditional cycle lasts between 10
and 15 days. Second advantage, it is more sparing out of raw material: it
needs only 1,5 m3 of wood to produce 1 m3 of coal whereas the traditional
method in need 2 m3. In the environmental plan, the furnace functions has
temperatures ranging between 1000 and 1100.C which makes it possible to burn
completely the polluting particles. It releases with final only from the
steam and the carbon dioxide which are partly re-used in the cycle of
production for the wood seasoning. |
